G2 Esports CS:GO star Nikola “NiKo” Kovač has sent out a harsh rebuke to the fan base of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), challenging them for “unfair” treatment of fellow pro player Håvard “HOXIC” Hvidtfeldt. NiKo took to Twitter to post his criticism following a G2 game against FaZe Clan, in which Hooxi was singled out for criticism for his performance.
In a tweet posted on June 29, NiKo wrote: “It’s incredible to see the amount of hate Hooxi is getting just because he’s young and inexperienced. I wish the community would give him a bit more respect and understanding.” He also added that he believed the behavior from fans was “disgusting and unacceptable”.
NiKo’s post was met with strong support from his fellow pros, with responding tweets from players like Noah “Nifty” Francis, Owen “smooya” Butterfield, and Douglas “FaZe Censor” Martin, who all echoed similar sentiments to NiKo’s.
Hooxi has been playing for G2 since April, and has quickly established himself as a strong competitor in the game. Despite his age – he’s just 17 – he’s already been gaining prominence in the CS:GO scene, and has been praised by his team for his commitment and potential.
However, it appears some fans have not been as patient with Hooxi, as NiKo’s tweet suggests. While fans can be passionate and critical of players – sometimes harshly – it’s important to remember these players are all human beings, and should be treated with respect.
Esports as an industry is at an interesting crossroads, with the combination of passionate supporters, new technology, and professional players all contributing to the rapidly growing field. It’s great to see NiKo taking the time to call out unfair criticism, in an effort to help create a fairer and more respectful environment for everyone involved.
