Mortal Kombat Could Follow TLoU’s Naming Strategy For Future Titles

It looks like developer NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat series could be preparing to follow in the footsteps of Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed The Last of Us franchise. Specifically, according to a recent tweet from Mortal Kombat co-creator and series veteran Ed Boon, the developer might be considering adopting a strategy of giving each singleplayer game in the series a unique name for each installment.

Mortal Kombat, of course, has traditionally been a series of fighting games with many sequels and periodic reboots. Each game has shared a common narrative framework, and many games in the series are connected to one another in many ways. However, Mortal Kombat has never been known for giving each game a unique name, as The Last of Us did with its sequel The Last of Us: Part II.

It would certainly make the series more interesting and potentially bring in new players, particularly those that may have missed out on previous entries in the series. It could also lead to more immersive storylines, as each title would be more clearly distinguished from the others. With Naughty Dog’s games gaining much attention for their immersive story-telling, it would be no surprise if NetherRealm Studios was trying to capitalize on the success of this approach.

It’s still unclear whether NetherRealm Studios will indeed decide to adopt this strategy for the Mortal Kombat franchise. However, with Boon’s tweet, it seems the studio is at least considering the option. If the studio does decide to go ahead with this approach, it will be an interesting direction for the series, and it could potentially reinvigorate the franchise for a new generation of players.
