ESL One Kuala Lumpur 2023 has just come to an end, leaving the Gladiators players in a state of shock. After making it all the way to the Grand Finals, the team had their dreams of taking the trophy quickly dashed in a 3-2 reverse against their harder-fought opponents. The disconnect between the surprise of the loss and the players’ expectations of victory was palpable as the news grew around them.
The team, however, can be proud of how far they made it and how well they performed throughout the tournament. After missing out on the playoffs of the first Major of the year, the Gladiators regrouped and put in some incredible performances to make it to the top. They put a stop to some major international players’ tournament progress, notably taking it to defending champions MiBR in strong and strategic matches throughout the tournament.
Unfortunately, the Grand Final was one game too many for the team as they fell in the reverse, despite a strong start to the series. The team’s in-game leader, Jesper “jw” Wecksell, was particularly dejected after the event, sharing this tweet:
“Just lost the ESL One Grand Final. Painful, but what a great run. Thanks Gladiators and everyone who cheered us on.” Jesper “jw” Wecksell
The team captain and AWPer, Dennis “dennis” Edman, tweeted some final words as well:
“Close, so close. Great tournament! Thanks for all the support #G2ARMY” Dennis “dennis” Edman
They have been met with an outpouring of support from their fans, colleagues and opponents alike, who have shown great empathy and understanding of how difficult a loss like this can be. Despite the crushing consequences of the result, the team can be proud of getting so far in the tournament and look forward to a brighter future in the months and years to come.
