Ranking the Best Mortal Kombat Games: A Retrospective

Mortal Kombat has been the source of countless heated debates between friends for the better part of a generation. As one of the greatest fighting game series, Mortal Kombat has released many iconic titles throughout its history and seemed to only become more popular in recent years. From the original classic to the innovative Mortal Kombat 11, the series has something for everyone. It can be difficult to decide where each game in this beloved franchise stands in terms of overall quality. To help fans of the series decide which version of the game is best for them, here are the best titles in the Mortal Kombat series, listed in order of popularity.

Mortal Kombat II (1994)

Though the original Mortal Kombat was a revolutionary game, its sequel is what truly pushed the series into pop culture consciousness. The original game had a limited move set and roster size, but by adding more characters and moves, along with a much deeper combo system, Mortal Kombat II became an instant classic. The improved visuals, sound, and gameplay made it a beloved classic and it’s considered the best game in the franchise.

Mortal Kombat 3 (1995)

Though this entry was not loved by everyone, Mortal Kombat 3 was still a big success, with an improved combo system and more characters and environments. Unfortunately, some of the original items and extras from the first two games were removed in this entry. Regardless, it was still a great game in its own right and an important step forward for the series.

Mortal Kombat 4 (1997)

The fourth game was released on the Nintendo 64 and boasted some impressive 3D visuals and smooth gameplay. However, it lacked some of the depth of its predecessor and was much shorter in length. Even so, this game was a major success and provided fans with the classic Mortal Kombat experience in 3D.

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (2002)

The fifth game made a switch to 3D fighting as well as new features and characters. The new combo system and fatalities were impressive, and the story mode was surprisingly deep for a fighting game. For fans of the series, it was a revolutionary experience and a great game.

Mortal Kombat 9 (2011)

The ninth installment was an attempt by the developers to return to the roots of the series. By making a return to the 2D fighting plane, they managed to provide a faithful experience to the classic games. Despite the lack of a comprehensive story, this game made up for it with the excellent fighting mechanics and solid DLC.

Mortal Kombat 11 (2019)

The latest installment in the series brought a new story mode and even more sophisticated and intense gameplay. The visuals were stunning and the redesigned characters and new special moves make this game a must-play for any fan of the series. This is the definitive Mortal Kombat experience.

These are the best Mortal Kombat games, from the hit original to the new spin-off titles. Each has its own unique style and aesthetic, and any fan of the series will appreciate the depth of the franchise.
