Nickmercs – the well-known Twitch streamer and popular competitive Fortnite player – recently came under fire for a lack of support for Pride Month in Schools. On June 7, the streamer was asked on Twitter to use his popular platform to spread the message of inclusivity and acceptance, to which he responded: “No thanks”.
This immediately sparked backlash from the LGBTQ+ community and its allies, condemning Nickmercs for his lack of empathy. Many accused him of using his considerable reach to express disdain for the LGBTQ+ community and telling them they weren’t welcome in the world of gaming.
The streamer became defensive, and in response, he took to Twitter to explain himself. He claimed that he had already shown his support by participating in several charity streams, and that he was not going to “force” his views on anyone.
Nickmercs’ response left many unsatisfied, and they expressed their displeasure on Twitter, citing his lack of visible support for the LGBTQ+ community. One user wrote: “How can you claim to be an ally of the LGBTQ+ community if you won’t even take one simple step to show your support?”
The incident was followed by a period of reflection for many in the gaming community, as they debated on the role of popular streamers and gaming personalities in promoting inclusivity. It was a reminder that even those with the platforms and means to do so must be held accountable for their actions.
Since then, Nickmercs has not commented further on the matter and it appears he has learned his lesson from the experience. But the debate over who should lead the charge for inclusivity in the gaming world, and how, is far from over.
