South Korean E-Sports Star Looks to Avoid Military Service After Winning Gold at Asian Games, Provoking Fans of K-pop Group BTS
South Korean E-Sports star, Lee Sang Hyeok, who is more popularly known as faker, recently made headlines by winning an unprecedented Gold medal in E-Sports at the Asian Games for South Korea. This feat was expected to have made him exempt from military service in his home country. However, Lee competitively plays the popular online game League of Legends and is a part of the team SK Telecom T1. His win at the Asian Games has caused a huge uproar amongst fans of the K-pop group BTS, leading to questions about the fairness of the rules.
South Korean law currently states that athletes who bag a Gold medal at an international event are exempt from military service. This has caused fans of BTS who have served in the military extremely frustrated as to why Lee is the only one who is being given this privilege. The reason why Lee is the only one given an advantage is because the laws have not been updated to include E-sports. This has caused a huge uproar amongst fans, as they feel that this decision is unfair and is a breach of human rights.
Lee has defended his decision by saying that it is his right to be exempt from military service. He also argued that E-Sports has become a legitimate form of competition and should be given the same respect and recognition as any other sport. The supporters of the K-pop group BTS however, feel that their members need to be given the same privilege. They also argue that there should be more equality among athletes and that the same laws should apply to all forms of competition.
The case of Lee has brought to light the issue of equality in South Korean society. There is a call for an update in the laws to include E-Sports and for all athletes to be given the same privileges regardless of their sport. Until then, the debate looks set to remain and we can only hope that justice is done in the end.
